From "One Day" to Day One: How a Trainer Helped Me See the Power of Coaching

Since last summer, I have been telling myself, “One day soon, I’ll start working with a trainer.” But that “one day” kept getting pushed aside by other demands and expenses related to my business.


Sound familiar?


Then, I met a trainer at a networking event, and over the next few months, I watched how they worked with their clients and began to trust their approach. And when I found out they offered semi-private sessions that made it more affordable for me, I realized I had run out of excuses. It was time to prioritize myself.

Fast forward to my first session. I woke up at 5 a.m. and immediately started doubting myself:


  • What if it’s too hard?

  • What if I can’t do it?

  • What if I’m too out of shape to even begin?


Embarrassment crept in, too. I was disappointed I had waited so long to make this a priority. But here’s what I learned: once I showed up, all of that disappeared.


My trainer told me to try, and they would step in to correct or modify as needed. I didn’t have to be perfect. One of the exercises was adjusted for me, and having an expert guide me through it made all the difference. Their encouragement motivated me to keep going, especially toward the end of a tough exercise when I was tired and wanted to stop.


By my third week, I felt more comfortable. I knew to try the exercises, trusting they’d come over to help if I needed it. I didn’t need as much guidance, and I was starting to see how showing up consistently would build progress.


Driving home after that first session, I started thinking about the people I work with.


The Power of Coaching: Coaching is Coaching, Whether it’s Fitness or Finances

So many of my clients feel the same anxiety I did that morning:


  • What if this is too hard?

  • What if I can’t stick with it?

  • What if I’ve waited too long to fix this?


The stress, embarrassment, and overwhelm they feel about their money are real. I hear it all the time:


  • “I keep paying bills late, and it’s stressing me out.”

  • “I don’t even know where to start, so I just avoid it.”

  • “Money is causing more arguments with my partner, and I hate it.”

  • “Everything feels chaotic. I’m constantly reacting and just trying to keep up.”

  • “I have no idea where my money is going, and that scares me.”

  • “I’m finally making more money, but I still feel stuck. Either I’m not getting ahead, or I’m scared to spend it.”


When you’re juggling personal and business finances, it can feel impossible to untangle. My trainer didn’t expect me to know everything. They met me where I was, and that’s exactly how I support my clients on their financial journey.


Breaking Habits That Don't Help Us and Building Ones That Do

Habits are at the core of both fitness and financial success. Some habits hold us back, whether it’s skipping workouts or impulsive purchases with money.


I’ve seen my clients struggle with everyday money habits like:


  • Paying bills late.

  • Not saving for taxes.

  • Mixing personal and business expenses.

  • Not knowing what they spend money on.

  • Paying down debt only to build it back up.

  • Moving money impulsively between accounts.

  • Being reactive when making financial decisions.


The good news? Habits can be changed.
